Important Notice for U.S. Educators — FERPA
IEP Goal Writer is designed for use with de-identified student information only. Do not enter student names, student ID numbers, dates of birth, or any other personally identifiable information (PII) as defined under FERPA (20 U.S.C. § 1232g).
Describe student needs using disability category, grade level, assessment scores without names, and observable behaviors. This approach lets you use AI assistance without transmitting protected educational records.

What Data We Collect

Input you type into the app (present levels, disability category, grade, assessment scores, behavior descriptions) is sent to our AI API to generate content. We do not store this input on our servers beyond the time needed to return the AI response.

Usage data: We count how many generations you have used. This count is stored only in your browser via localStorage and is never linked to your identity or sent to our servers.

License keys: If you purchase a license, we verify your key against our database. We store only the key and a usage counter — no personal information is associated with the key.

AI Processing

Content generation is powered by a third-party AI service. When you generate a goal, PLAAFP, or other content, your input is transmitted to that service for processing and returned to you. We do not store this data on our own servers beyond what is needed to return the response.

We strongly recommend not entering any information that could identify a specific student. Use disability category, grade, and scores without names. This is both best practice and required under FERPA for most use cases.

If your district has strict data sovereignty or data residency requirements, contact us at support@iepgoalwriter.pro before using this tool.

FERPA Compliance Guidance

  • De-identify before you type. Remove names, student IDs, birthdates, or any combination of details that could identify a student in your school community.
  • No BAA is currently available. IEP Goal Writer does not currently offer a Business Associate Agreement or FERPA Data Processing Agreement. The tool should only be used with de-identified descriptions of student needs — not with actual education records.
  • Check your district policy. Some districts prohibit any external AI tools for IEP-related work. Verify with your special education coordinator or district technology officer before using this app.
  • Generated content is a starting point. All AI-generated goals, PLAAFPs, and recommendations must be reviewed, individualized, and approved by the IEP team before appearing in any official document.

Data Storage — Your Browser

The following is stored only in your browser (localStorage) and never sent to our servers:

  • Student Profiles you create in the Profiles tool
  • Generation history (tool outputs from your session)
  • Usage count (free generations used)
  • Theme and language preferences

Clearing your browser data or switching to a different device will erase this information. Cloud sync is not yet available. We plan to add optional account-based sync in a future release — it will be opt-in and never automatic.

Cookies & Analytics

We do not use cookies for tracking or advertising. We do not load any third-party analytics scripts. Basic server-side access logs may be retained to monitor uptime and detect abuse.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy as the product evolves (e.g., when account features or cloud sync are added). Material changes will be announced in-app.
